LA BOCA

CASA ROSADA

FEATURED Port of Call

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA Argentina’s beloved capital is tucked away in a far corner of South America, but it’s as switched-on as any city, anywhere. Spanish traders created the wealth and European immigrants shaped the architecture that gives Buenos Aires its old-world ambiance, but it’s the Latin passion for fútbol (soccer), parrillas (steakhouses) and, of course, tango that electrifies the culture. After walking the living, dancing street museum that is El Caminito, enjoy an al fresco lunch amid the technicolor houses of La Boca barrio, where a myriad of forces gave rise to the tango in the 19th century. Score antiques and collectibles in historic San Telmo, stand beneath the Casa Rosada balcony where Eva Perón — known to many as Evita — addressed throngs in Plaza de Mayo, make a pilgrimage to the grand mausoleums of Recoleta Cemetery, explore the redeveloped Puerto Madero and test the acoustics of Teatro Colón. A heady itinerary, but Buenos Aires will inspire you to do it all… and tango, too.
