Go beyond the coasts that follow the country's famous shoreline, on a journey to the interior of Costa Rica. Ride a historical train on a spectacularly scenic route through the picturesque countryside to Orotina, where you will board a boat bound for the biologically rich mangroves that rim the Tarcoles river. The mangroves provide shelter and a breeding ground for all sorts of creatures, including birds such as herons, roseate spoonbills and kingfishers. You may see hummingbirds flitting about and Panama flycatchers mournfully whistling with their distinctive call. Also, spot crocodiles sunning along the banks and iguanas in the branches of the trees that grow right to the river’s edge.
