Sicilian street markets are a cacophony of sights and sounds. From a colourful assortment of fruits, vegetables, fish and meats to vendors barking about bargains for anybody who will listen. This is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Palermo offers three to choose from: Vucciria, Capo and Ballarò. The latter is the largest, liveliest and surely the most picturesque of Sicily. Its name, Ballarò, has ancient Arab origins, and as you walk through the outdoor shops and stands, you will appreciate its similarity to a souk. While here, be sure to taste some of the delicious street food, such as sfincione and panelle .
