HIDDEN GEM DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN
Between the islands of Ireland and Great Britain in the Irish Sea, there’s a small dot of land, about the same size as Guam, called the Isle of Man. It formed 85,000 years ago when melting glaciers caused sea levels to rise, cutting off Mesolithic Britain from mainland Europe. The Isle of Man is not only culturally and historically different from its surrounding islands, but also linguistically diverse. Among the languages spoken is Manx, a Gaelic language similar to some types of Irish Gaelic, but unique to the island. Trivia buffs will delight in learning that this island was the birthplace of the Gibb brothers of Bee Gees fame.
