But you don’t have to worry about schedules or transfer stations because your ship will bring you within steps of its beautifully preserved canal area. The canal was a central part of the city’s busy port in the first half of the 20th century, then beautifully restored in the 1980s. The old warehouses and former office buildings of the shipping and trade companies were transformed into museums, shops and restaurants, preserving Otaru’s character. For a different perspective, take a canal cruise hosted by vivacious boat captains that aim to entertain.
