BOTANIC BEAUTY BURNIE, AUSTRALIA

The first settlers of Burnie literally carved a village out from the rain forests and tea-tree swamps that occupied the area. After mineral deposits were discovered in Tasmania, the town prospered, but its connection to the natural world remained. Spend some time at Fernglade Reserve, one of Burnie's most beautiful places. You’ll find this peaceful river valley on the edge of the city refreshing, and the walking paths are lined with more than a dozen species of native orchids. Another highlight is Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden. Surrounded by native bushland and wildlife, this beautiful garden is one of the only known places where rhododendrons can be grown in the same garden.
