From Corinto, explore the two Leóns — the original city that was buried in volcanic ash, then a later version, which became an alluring colonial city. Spanish conquistadors founded Old León on Lake Managua, but the site was abandoned in the early 1600s, after volcanic eruptions and an earthquake destroyed it. The site now showcases the excavated ruins of one of the earliest Spanish colonial settlements. At this UNESCO World Heritage site, explore the cathedral, convent, royal foundry and private homes constructed of wood, bamboo and mud. Compare that to the new León and its magnificent León Cathedral, which beautifully illustrates several architectural styles.
