DUNGENESS CRAB LIFE SPAN & REPRODUCTION

• Dungeness crabs have a maximum life span of about 10 years.

• Males are usually about 4 years old when large enough to be legally harvested. • Male crabs are mature enough to reproduce 1-2 years before they can be legally harvested. • Female crabs may never be harvested and must be released unharmed to breed. • Successful mating can only take place when the female is newly molted. • Females can store sperm for up to 2 years and fertilize eggs even if male populations are down.
