Tongass Narrows separates Revillagigedo Island (aka Revilla) from Gravina Island. Wedged in between is little Pennock Island. Every August, swimmers race around the island in the 8.2 mile Pennock Island Challenge, considered one of the World’s Best 100 Open Water Swims. Who can forget, “The Bridge to Nowhere?” Welcome to Nowhere! That bridge was proposed to be built between Revilla Island and Gravina Island. Opponents said it was a waste a money as nothing was on the island but the airport, proponents said that if a bridge were built the island would grow. The idea was voted down. The last quirky thing to note in Ketchikan is the International Airport; and yes, it is an international airport, as there are flights to Canada. Because there is no bridge between the islands, passengers must take a small ferry across the Tongass Narrows to catch a plane. As you pass the airport, you’ll notice the pier used for float planes: this is the airport’s connecting terminal, Ketchikan-style. But the airport’s claim to fame is the control tower. It is the only airport in the world where the runway is higher than the control tower. Whether it is your first or last stop, kick-up your heels in Ketchikan and have fun. The locals sure do!
