Iberian Peninsula

A larger bay awaits at the beautiful Cala San Vicente Beach in Ibiza’s far northeast, where you can rent kayaks and SUPS onsite to paddle out onto the stunning waters or relax with cocktails and tapas at a low-key beach bar. SPECTACULAR NATURE PARKS Fascinating salt-flat landscapes unfold at Ses Salines Natural Park, an important area for migratory birds that extends from the south of Ibiza to the north of the neighboring Balearic island, Formentera. Easy and flat walkways and biking paths here lead to beaches and areas where flamingoes can be spotted from August to October. Tall stands of pine trees line the park’s beaches, making quite the contrast to the more rugged coastlines elsewhere around the island. Interesting sites to seek out within the park include the Sal Rossa watchtower, built in the 16th century to help ward off pirate attacks, and Sa Canal at the end of the long, wide crescent of sand at Platja de Ses Salines. Near the canal, look for rails that were used to transport salt to boats. Still today, cargo boats leave loaded with the gourmet Ibizan export.

A short drive from Ibiza town near Talamanca Beach, Ses Feixes Wetlands is similar to Ses Salines, with more marshes fed by saltwater. The landscapes are home to an ancient network of Moorish irrigation systems you can still make out in the surroundings, too. More than 140 bird species have been recorded at Ses Feixes, from pheasants and water rails to Sardinian warblers, red-legged partridges, and European goldfinches–drawing birders from all over Europe. Stroll the pathways in search of pretty winged things while breathing in the fresh, salty sea breeze and savoring a side of Ibiza that many visitors overlook entirely.
