Erik the Red, the Norse explorer known for discovering and colonizing Greenland, was so overwhelmed by this region’s lush, emerald-lawned valleys that he christened the country “Greenland” more than 1,000 years ago. Amidst the fjords, glaciers, islands and winding coastlines that make up South Greenland, Narsaq’s tranquil landscape of colorful houses is surrounded by sheep farms and fertile fields. Learn about Norse settlement history at the Narsaq Museum, which also displays locally found rocks and minerals for which the region is known. Hike one of the two mountains that rise directly behind Narsaq — Tasiilaq or Qaqqarsuaq — before rewarding yourself with a beer made from ancient iceberg water at a small Greenlandic brewhouse called Qajaq.
