TLINGIT HERITAGE ICY STRAIT POINT (HOONAH), ALASKA Immerse yourself in truly unspoiled wilderness. Set deep in the heart of the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest — the largest in the U.S. — this port is centered around a restored salmon cannery that features a museum, restaurants and local arts and crafts shops. Take a whale-watching tour from Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in Alaska. Drive a Jeep along the old logging roads that crisscross Chichagof Island, home to more brown bears than humans. Watch for Sitka black- tailed deer and bald eagles as you ascend Hoonah Mountain in a window-walled gondola before riding a tram past towering stands of Sitka spruce and western hemlock.
