Among the many words used to describe Hubbard Glacier, “humbling” is perhaps the most appropriate for North America’s largest tidewater glacier. It is 76 miles long and more than six miles wide where it meets the ocean. It is approximately 600 feet tall at its terminal face — 350 feet exposed above the waterline and 250 feet below. It is also over 2,000 feet thick at some locations, and the terminal face’s ice originally fell as snow up to 500 years ago. From your blissful vantage point in Disenchantment Bay, prepare to be thrilled by the crack of this Alaskan colossus calving into a suddenly roiled sea.
