Waingapu is the largest town on the island of Sumba in the Nusa Tenggara (Southeast Islands) region of Indonesia. Besides stretches of glorious white sand like Walakiri Beach — where picturesque mangroves appear at low tide and vendors sell basic meals beneath palm trees — you’ll find scattered villages of thatched, timber-built homes. In Prailiu Village, megalithic tombs are symbols of an indigenous belief system in which locals ritualistically worship the spirits of their ancestors. Head inland for sublime views from Wairinding Hill. Later in the day, enjoy a meal of freshly caught fish at one of the quiet eateries near Pelabuhan Lama (Old Port).
