NEW FREEDOM CITY FREDERIKSTED, ST. CROIX
You’ll find plenty of history to go along with the usual Caribbean bliss on this largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Referred to as “Freedom City” by locals — an uprising in 1848 led to an emancipation proclamation on Frederiksted’s waterfront — the city was destroyed by a labor revolt in 1878. Its restoration during the Victorian era is reflected in the town’s colorful architecture. When not snorkeling with sea turtles, wander the verdant ruins of a sugar-cane-plantation-turned-botanic-garden and take a tour of the Cruzan Rum Distillery. In Christiansted, go on a self-guided walking tour of sites directly associated with Alexander Hamilton’s childhood years on St. Croix, then head to Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States.
