LETTER from the CREATIVE DIRECTOR
for seconds. For a more adventurous palate, be sure to read about the 11 foods to try while sailing the Inside Passage, including spruce tips and muktuk. If your journey leads you to the northeast, enjoy the delight of more fresh seafood and local dishes. And while you may know Maine for its lobster, whether in rolls or steamed, it might just be their blueberry pie that you find most impressive. Elsewhere, strolling through streets lined with gorgeous architecture and locals chatting in French, you might — if only for a moment — think you’re in Paris instead of Montréal. Read more about both of these places in the pages that follow. As with every fulfilling journey, you will find yourself exploring much more than the marquis attractions. Perhaps the highlight of your time in Juneau is a visit to the Shrine of St. Therese. There’s a chance that you will talk about the thrill of embarking on a fishing charter off the coast of Roatán or the silence of the bay just before a humpback whale breaches the surface for years to come. To inspire your next memorable moment, each article in this issue is paired with a collection of voyages that bring these destinations to your suite’s doorstep, because you really have to see North America for yourself .
introducing our readers to that unique musical style should be our opening article. The conversation naturally flowed into the musicality of one of Aruba’s local languages, Papiamento. I wanted to learn more, so we asked one of our favorite travel writers to shine a light on its history and teach us a few Papiamento words. By the time you’re done reading that article, you’ll be ready to practice a few phrases in the shops and restaurants of Oranjestad. Another local gem I didn’t know about until we were putting this issue together is the famous Soggy Dollar beach bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. While you can get there by land, arriving by boat only gets you so close, so visitors have to swim to the beach. Once ashore, you’ll want to reward yourself with BVI’s most delicious drink made by one of this bars most beloved bartenders, Leon Miller. In our interview with Leon, you’ll learn about the allure of the Soggy Dollar and the enduring tradition of the Original Painkiller cocktail. We also take you north to Alaska, to a town called Talkeetna. This tiny frontier village is home to a mere 1,200 year-round residents and one incredibly delicious food truck, Talkeetna Tako. Their tacos and quesadillas are made with Alaska halibut that will have you coming back
I spend the better part of my day talking about travel experiences. By telling stories about these moments, I get to relive the excitement and bring my listeners with me on a virtual journey. Whether I’m reminiscing about dog sledding in Alaska or sailing St. Maarten’s coast on an America’s Cup racing boat, I always find myself ending the story with the disclaimer, “You really have to see it for yourself.” Most avid travelers like yourself know that the smallest nuances often make your journey all the more special. Figuring out the denominations of the country’s currency, experiencing a dish you’ve had so many times as something entirely new, or the nervousness felt when speaking a different language are moments typically left out of the stories you tell yet never lost from the memories you hold. For this edition of EXPLORE Magazine: North America, I wanted to spotlight some of the small details set against the vast and beautiful backdrops of their destinations. The Caribbean alone comprises more than 700 islands, each with innumerable hidden treasures, so this was no easy feat. So, I engaged my team, and the gems began to shine through. As one of our creative team described her first time hearing the melancholic rhythm of Bachata while in the Dominican Republic, I knew that

Dominican Republic
Like many “rags to riches” stories we’ve come to admire,
the history and evolution of Bachata represents the power of an
individual culture, and the impact it can have on the human experience.
Woven into the fabric of the Dominican Republic, Bachata reflects
the depth, the strength, and the creative magic of its people.
A History as Storied as Its Songs
as it was outlawed by then national president and dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina. Despite its unfavorable reputation and the active censoring for airplay, Bachata continued to grow in popularity. Earlier recordings spoke of melancholy and heart-wrenching love stories. Reminiscent of American Blues music, these recordings mastered the art of storytelling through song. Jose Manuel Calderon, one of Bachata’s pioneers, is heralded as the first Dominican Bachata artist to produce original recordings. Transitioning from traditional to modern Bachata in the late 1980s and 1990s, the genre saw a significant change in its reception as well as in its popularity. Artists like Antony Santos rose to stardom with the incorporation of modern instruments and musical arrangements. In 1992, Juan-Luis Guerra garnered a Grammy for the album Bachata Rosa which helped propel the genre’s international success. Now into the 21st century, and with several versions (or stylings) in tow, Bachata remains authentic and powerful, still working as a beacon of emotional expression for the Dominican people and its adoring fans around the world.
What’s recently become a popular and celebrated style of music and dance dates back more than 60 years. The birth of Bachata occurred in the early 1960s in the Dominican Republic. Its musical stylings began as a combination of Bolero and Son, both derivatives from Cuba to the west of Hispaniola. From its inception, Bachata was founded in fusion; its sound represents a blending of cultures and musical styles. Culturally, Bachata is a three-strand chord, with roots tied to the indigenous Taino, Africa’s Sub-Saharan region, and the southern provinces of Spain. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Bachata was deemed undesirable, boorish, and even crude. At one point it was even censored from regular public consumption in the Dominican Republic. The genre became associated with only the lowest class of local society. Patrons could only experience Bachata in seedy clubs and venues,
6
Cultural Infusion and Evolution
Whether listening to the lyrics or learning the basic dances, an experience with Bachata is the chance to connect with the history and present culture of the Dominican Republic. It boasts the vibrancy of Latin America paired with pieces of other cultures from around the world. As the music has evolved towards the end of the 20th century and into present day, the corresponding dance has followed suit. Traditional Bachata and Sensual Bachata reflect the original elements of the genre that make it unique. Birthed from this pairing was Fusion Bachata , which is the mix of both Traditional and Sensual. The flow of full body movements and diverse instrumentation in the music pay homage to the original while highlighting the beauty of intercultural fusion. With the introduction of modern Bachata, other Latin genres like Tango and Salsa are blended into the mix. Known as Bachata Urbana , this iteration comes into play going into the 21st century, incorporating elements of hip-hop and dancehall songs. Once locay ostracized, Now globay embraced Despite its humble beginnings, Bachata has emerged as a musical force that draws in love and intrigue. Bachata flourishes in its fluidity. It creates connections and tells amazing stories. To experience Bachata is to experience the vibrancy of its Caribbean homeland. It’s an experience in the vividness of Latin culture. Best of all, Bachata’s true beauty is experienced through more than the notes or the steps or the legions of fans it’s garnered. The true beauty of Bachata is in its resilience. Professionally, Shawanda James is a writer and a member of the Marketing team at Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Personally, Shawanda is the proud mother of four children who loves good books, good food, and incredible ocean views (especially on a cruise ship!)

The Native Language of Aruba A Guide to PAPIAMENTO:
By Mari de Armas
10
Pa·pia·men·to /ˌpä-pyə-ˈmen-(ˌ)tō /
noun: a Spanish-based creole language of Netherlands Antilles
While I’ve never been a fan of the tourist phrasebook — perhaps because I have yet to find myself at a stranger’s dinner party where inquisitive locals want to know how many siblings I have — I do believe that learning key phrases enhances your travel experience. Before arriving at my destination, I try to memorize a few key phrases, in addition to the four essentials of hello, good-bye, please, and thank you. And preparing for my trip to Aruba was no di«erent. I was pleased to see that English and Spanish were widely spoken (check and check), but the o¬cial languages of Aruba are Dutch (hallo!) and Papiamento (*crickets*), one I was not familiar with.
Bon Bini to Papiamento Like every curious traveler, I scoured books and online resources for more about Papiamento, which,
language of the majority, became a forbidden language and Dutch became the only language of instruction that was permitted in the schools. It took almost 200 years for Papiamento to gain the status of o¬cial language in the Islands. Aruba came first. In May 2003, the Aruban government declared Papiamento an o¬cial language. Curaçao was the second country, turning Papiamento into an o¬cial language in 2007. The Dushi Experience To the ear, it sounds like Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and African Creole — and I could not get enough of listening to it on the island. This combination of languages conspired to create a word that admittedly at first made me giggle, but then continuously charmed me: Dushi. Dushi is a Papiamento word that is sort of a catch-all, much like “aloha”
is in Hawaiian. It literally means sweet. I was called Mi dushi, a few times as a term of endearment, similar to sweetheart or darling. And if there was ever a word to describe the sugary architecture and delightful locals of Oranjestad, it’s that word. Watch the reaction of shop attendants when you say, “bon dia!” the daytime greeting in Papiamento, or when you thank the café sta« by saying, “masha danki.” This seemingly small gesture goes a long way for an Aruban. Ban Goza (Let’s Enjoy) Aruba Papiamento has a rhythm of its own, so it’s important to put the emphasis on the right syllable. But, don’t worry, you’ll be able to pick it up quite quickly. Whether it’s Papiamento or any other language, the e«ort of speaking to locals in their language adds a new layer to your journey.
by the way, is also spoken in Bonaire, Curaçao and Saint
Eustatius. There are several theories as to origins of Papiamento. The majority of scholars say it was born from the Cape Verdean language that arrived to the Caribbean as a result of the slave trade. The vernacular expanded to include Portuguese words, including the name Papiamento itself, which is derived from the Portuguese word “papear” (to chat). It later expanded to include words and phrases from other languages and cultures, including the Arawak Indians, to weave a beautiful identity of its own. The language became widespread and adopted by the Portuguese and Spanish occupiers, until the arrival of the Dutch. In 1815, Papiamento, the

ST. BARTHELEMY or St. Barts as it’s better known, is the Caribbean’s very own playground of the rich and famous. The allure of laid back luxury in the Caribbean, infused with French elegance and sophistication, makes this one of the world’s most charming islands to experience.
WHERE TO SHOP Some of the best (and duty free) shopping in the world is o«ered on St. Barts. Gustavia, the bustling little capital, has about 200 stores on three major shopping streets, including the Quai de la République, which has earned the nickname, “rue du Couturier.” Signature designer boutiques like Cartier, Hermès, and YSL have elegant displays and o«er the perfect opportunities to pick up designer items or fashion forward couture not available in the U.S. Local artisans exhibit paintings and jewelry in galleries and exciting store fronts all over the island. Several understated, luxe stores o«er an array of boho-chic and whimsical home goods, bohemian jewelry and adorned leather bracelets. Some worthy local products include the intricately woven native latanier palm straw baskets, handbags and broad-brimmed hats, made by the women of Corossol and Colombier. A variety of lotions and oils that are locally produced from island plants are perfect for unique and interesting gifts, while a bottle of rhum vanille is great to bring home! The St. Barts map necklaces and bracelets make for a charming and sentimental purchase.
barts What was once a sleepy, little village, Gustavia has become a thriving and glamorous seaport with upscale boutiques, gourmet restaurants and historic sites flanking its streets with true French-Caribbean flair.
BY LIESL NOEL
WHERE TO DINE The small island, made up of a collection of small villages, boasts beautiful beaches, and a wonderful variety of extraordinary dining experiences where options abound, filled with exotic local fruits and fresh seafood. Le Select is a local staple, claiming to be the island’s oldest bar, having been around for seventy years, where delicious bargain eats and local culture can be experienced. For a truly unique dining experience, combining authentic island ingredients and French flavors, stock up on provisions at Maya’s To Go for the likes of onion tarts, smoked salmon, cauliflower gratin, delicious sandwiches and more; then, to execute the perfect picnic, stop into Le Gout de Vin for a chilled bottle of rosé.

St. Barts
Near Grand Saline Beach, for a more tropical setting, there is Le Tamarin that was built around a more than 100-year- old tamarind tree. Venturing along the coast there are some delightful eateries including the popular beach club, Nikki Beach, where it’s not unusual to spot a celebrity or three. The resorts are home to some of the finest restaurants on the island. The famous Eden Rock, with unsurpassed views, serves their signature Eden Colada, a cocktail that captures the flavor and essence of the island. Made with rum, champagne, pineapple juice and coconut sorbet, it honors the birthplace of rum while blending in the sophistication of St. Tropez. Watching a performance of the dramatic cocktails being mixed and served is like its own captivating show. The mysterious “cloud” that floats on top and bursts just as it’s served is pretty spectacular to see. The restaurant serves some fantastic dishes, the asparagus with lemon-infused droplets is simply amazing. Another indulgence is Le Toiny, where diners can treat their palates, while appreciating the magnificent scenery. (They o«er a truck to the beach bar and restaurant.) For sophisticated Italian cuisine, L’Isola in Gustavia is one of St. Barts’ most refined restaurants, where delicious dishes like bu«alo mozzarella with fresh passion fruit and fresh squid (a personal favorite of mine), are served and savored. Wherever your meanderings take you on this small, boutique island, it is fun to just be a part of this charming and fascinating lifestyle. Whether taking a stroll along Mega Yacht Row, enjoying a drink or snack at a local cafe, or shopping for the perfect gift along the Quai de la République, St. Barts o«ers an A-list experience all its own!

MEXICO’S KALEIDOSCOPE of color
Mexico’s rich cultural history extends back through the ages, encompassing a mix of intermingling cultures for an eclectic blend of traditions and deeply entrenched customs. This heritage has filtered into mainstream America and beyond, taking its place in the culinary arts, television and movies, books, music and fashion.

Mexico
Comfort and functionality is at the heart of many of Mexico’s most enduring fashion styles. In a climate where heat is an inescapable part of daily life, breathable, light-weight materials and flowing, loose-fit huipil dresses are the di«erence between wilting like a desert rose, or remaining cactus-fresh. Add to the mix an iconic oversized sombrero hat and you have the requisite shade to cope with sweltering days. When the evenings get cool, throw on an attractive quechquemitl (or shawl) for warmth. Traditional clothing worn in Mexico has remained consistently functional, changing slightly with the times. Modest but often with elaborate embroidery and vivid colours, garments worn by women are feminine and bright. Flared ankle length skirts, sleeveless tunic dresses called huipils and a wrap or rebozo which often doubles as a baby carrier. Ceremonial huipils are usually worn for special events. The word “huipil” is itself a Nahuatl word — proof of the garment’s ancient heritage. Mexican men tend to be a little less vivid, with their sarapes (or capes) being understated — and oh so functional. Originally worn by shepherds and farmers, the handy sarapes could be used as a coat, a saddle blanket and a sleeping bag for those nights outdoors. On formal occasions the horseman’s charro suits are worn. Having adopted the European mode of dress, it is usual for men to wear pants and shirts. The women display their flamboyant hues with traditional dresses as their feathers. Ornate needlework and a wealth of meaningful symbols and patterns may decorate traditional clothing, often revealing the origins or family of the wearer. In pre-Columbian times, the age of the Aztecs, fabrics were hand-woven and crafted with natural textiles such as cotton, bark and the

indigenous agave plant. Pigment was dependant on plant dyes, so colors were limited. The influx of Europeans brought wool and silk into Mexico’s creative repertoire, as well as the advent of brilliant new dyes for a wider selection of color. A garment’s value increased with the use of the more costly dyes, making color a status symbol. The importance of family along with deep religious beliefs are evident in many of the celebrations still held today. Dia de los Muertos is an excellent example. It has been portrayed in many current movies and tales (even Disney has made a film about it!). Another age-old tradition is one which dates back to the Spanish conquistadores, but probably has roots in the Aztec’s custom of preparing and celebrating tribe members transitioning into adulthood. A 15-year-old girl marks her milestone birthday with a quinceañera and pays homage to age-old traditions through her use of clothing and adornments. In addition to her mother placing a crown on her head to remind the girl she is a daughter of God, her father changes her flat shoes to high-heeled ones, signifying the transition from girl to woman. Mexico’s clothing traditions and heritage remain as beautiful and fascinating as the robust culture of which they’re a part. British Virgin Islands
LOCAL INSIGHTS with LEON MILLER A beloved BVI bartender shares his tips for the highlights on Jost Van Dyke
BY TERRY WARD
Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Leon Miller is one of the best loved bartenders in the British Virgin Islands. And during a port of call on the beautiful island of Jost Van Dyke, you’ll most likely find him bantering behind the bar, slinging Painkillers (the must-have cocktail in these parts) and spreading good vibes at Soggy Dollar Bar — one of the most iconic
beach bars in all of the Caribbean. Wondering what’s in a Painkiller? The
refreshing (and notoriously strong) cocktail is made with pineapple juice, orange juice, dark rum and a splash of coconut cream — then garnished with fresh nutmeg on top. The drink is said to have been invented at the Soggy Dollar, even while its fame has spread to points far beyond these tropical isles. Come to mingle with yachties, tourists and locals at this legendary bar that calls itself a “sunny place for shady people” and was named for the wet bills that sailors come ashore with to pay o« their bar tabs. We talked to Miller about how great it is to be back behind the bar and serving guests at Soggy Dollar and asked for his other tips, too, for what to get up to during a short stay on Jost Van Dyke.

WHAT SETS YOUR PAINKILLERS APART AT THE SOGGY DOLLAR?
Miller: We’re the original! The home of the Painkiller. They’re mixed up at bars all over the BVI, but it’s only right you try one here first, and then try the others — you can be the judge of your favorite. People come to me here every day and are like, “We’ve been to all the other bars in the BVI and we decided not to have a Painkiller until we got to Soggy Dollar.” We’re just so famous for this cocktail, you really have to try it here first. HOW DO MOST GUESTS SPEND A FEW HOURS AT THE SOGGY DOLLAR? Miller: The vibe is of course di«erent for di«erent people. But most people come in here just super happy and excited to be on vacation. They come with the intention to have a good time and have some good drinks. And we’re here to make that happen. People spend a lot of money to come to the BVI, and when I come to work, I come with all the good vibes to make sure they have the whole island experience. Some people sunbathe and swim on the beach, others play Jenga or the ring game. Some just come to relax at the bar and laugh and have a good time. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE TOURISM FINALLY BACK ON JOST VAN DYKE? Miller: All the locals are really happy and welcoming about it. We were home for more than a year and didn’t have tourists coming, we had a lot of government restrictions. I spent the time during the pandemic focusing on my photography and other things. Now it feels so good to be back, face to face and having conversations with people. And visitors are so excited to be back here, too. It’s a really great feeling. WHAT FOOD SHOULD ONE ABSOLUTELY TRY WHEN VISITING JOST VAN DYKE? Miller: There are definitely a few things you shouldn’t miss. At Soggy Dollar, we do a great Sunday barbecue as well as delicious rotis and jerk chicken sandwiches. You’ll never go wrong ordering conch fritters in the BVI. Seddy’s One Love Bar & Grill specializes in lobster. And Coco Loco’s Beach Bar on White Bay is the spot for great pizzas. Near Foxy’s on Great Harbor, the Tipsy Shark is a new spot right on the beach with a really nice menu of local dishes, too. You’ll never go wrong with the catch of the day on Jost. And don’t miss Pinky’s Delight on Great Harbor, too — a great little food truck where you can try coconut bread, Johnny Cakes and other local foods.
