International influences from the Portuguese and Dutch helped shape Nagasaki, a thriving port on the island of Kyushu that’s among Japan’s most cosmopolitan cities. The atomic bomb fell here shortly after Hiroshima during World War II, and a visit to the Nagasaki Peace Park brings contemplation on the tragic events of 1945. Today, the rebuilt city is modern and dynamic, with ancient touches, too. One of Japan’s oldest bridges, Megane-bashi dates to 1634 and stretches languorously over the Nakashima River. Follow the stone streets up one of the city’s verdant hillsides to see the scenic neighborhood of Dutch Slope, full of 19th-century homes. Nagasaki has a surprise in store down every block.
