CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO Renowned for its exceptional offshore fishing, Cabo San Lucas is a bucket list destination for many anglers. While many species are caught in these bountiful waters, most charter captains are focused on targeting marlin. It won’t take long to reach the prime fishing waters off the Baja Peninsula and begin trolling for these deep-water monsters. Marlin trolling tactics generally include using hook-less teasers or dredges to attract the fish with artificial lures and rigged natural baits such as small mackerel, bonito or strip baits to entice the bite. Pay close attention to your surface baits as
you troll, and you may witness the heart-pounding moments leading up to a bite. Since marlin use their long bill to slash and stun prey, they often make their presence known before they bite. If you’re lucky enough to battle one of these giants, the goal is to keep the line tight. Bow to them when they jump and patiently tire them out, gaining line with each crank of the reel to bring them alongside the boat for a few pictures and a safe release.
