Sitka is a fabulous place to get a feel for all that Southeast Alaska o ers. Learn about its past at the Baranof Castle State Historic Site, where Alaska was ocially transferred from Russia to the United States in 1867. Observe captivating wildlife on an outdoor excursion or by visiting the Alaska Raptor Center or the Fortress of the Bear, two organizations dedicated to caring for and educating the public about their favorite animals. Sitka is also a great place to shop for handmade arts and crafts and to try some of the local cuisine, such as fresh salmon, reindeer sausage and borscht, a reminder of the city’s past.
