Stroll Old San Juan’s blue-tinged cobblestone streets, enjoying restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings, beautiful plazas, quaint shops, art galleries and local eateries. Overlooking the entrance to San Juan Bay on the northwestern edge of Old San Juan, an imposing citadel was started in 1539 and took over 200 years to build. A UNESCO World Heritage site known as “El Morro,” the citadel is a labyrinth of barracks, dungeons and ramps, as well as lookouts oering breathtaking ocean views. After exploring the fort, retreat into El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System that is home to some wonderful tropical wildlife, including coqui tree frogs.
